Growers Pat Lang and Nicholas Rigger own and operate Hexagon Projects & Farm, nestled in the hills 8 miles south of downtown Menomonie. Established in 2018, Hexagon produces a wide range of vegetables on a small scale, with a focus on heirloom and open pollinated varieties, as these tend to be extra delicious and resilient, and the grower can save the seed for subsequent plantings.
The farm is managed using mostly hand tools, the favorites being the broad fork, scythe, and a variety of hoes and rakes, and mulch and cover crops are constantly in use for the benefit of the soil and surrounding ecosystem. Hexagon is Certified Naturally Grown, which means organic methods are used and that additional steps are taken to enhance biodiversity and preserve the surrounding landscape.
The ‘projects’ in the farm’s name refers primarily to the development of an on-farm artist residency on which Nick and Pat plan to start work in 2019, featuring a work share in which participants receive lodging, studios, and workshop space in exchange for some farm work. Hexagon sells produce at the Midtown Farmers Market in Minneapolis, and Pat and Nick are thrilled to distribute their produce so close to home, as part of Local Choice Cooperative Producers.
